Naughty and Nice: the Duality of White for 2014: Resort 2014 and S/S 2014 collections have flooded the fashion-scape in a sea of white. Attached to the colour are notions of romanticism, purity and innocence, but writer Alina Kulesh reveals its naughtier side.
After reviewing Spring 2014 and Resort 2014, I saw that several designers were favouring white-on-white ensembles, but there was a certain darkness to these whites. So I wanted to talk about White, but not in the familiar, romantic, virginal sense, but White…the uncanny, badass, and bold non-colour of 2014.
The great thing about writing a trend piece for The Genteel is that you get to explore the trend from several cultural angles. I immediately thought about Sharon Stone in Basic instinct—who could forget her in that film? And since this has been the summer for Gatsby, I couldn’t help but think about all the white references in the book (I tried to avoid The Great Gatsby references, I really did).
For someone who lives in black and grey, I have to admit, there’s something seductive about white.
